D’ya hear me – The science of mishearing

On the day that Peter Higgs and Francois Englert have been awarded the Nobel Prize for physics for some seriously mind-bending stuff it is good to see that science still has a ridiculous side. For the oldies amongst us the Maxwell cassette tape ads  summed up perfectly the issue of misheard lyrics but just in case you wanted to understand the science behind it check out the work of The Clerks. Supported by The Wellcome Trust this group are combining science, music and performance to explore the extremely posh sounding “cocktail party” problem, which incidentally is not concerned with how many glasses of champagne you should have before you move onto the hard stuff. Check out their research at www.talesfrombabel.co.uk and their performances of polytextual compositions at a music venue near you.
